Z31 O2 Sensor

image description
(image from: Nissan Motor Company Factory Service Manual)

The Exhaust Gas Sensor (O2 Sensor) that is installed in the exhaust manifold, monitors the density of oxygen in the exhaust gases. There were two types of O2 Sensors Used in the Z31. They were zirconia and titania. You can look up what sensor is used in your car under the ECU Differences page. Zirconia sensors consist of a closed-end tube made of ceramic zirconia and other components. Porous platinum electrodes cover the tubes inner and outer surfaces The closed-end of the tube IS exposed to the exhaust gas in the exhaust manifold The outer surface of the tube contacts the exhaust gas while the inner surface contacts the air In order to ensure the stable performance of the exhaust gas sensor, a ceramic heater is employed inside the zirconia tube Titania sensors consist of ceramic Titania (major Sensor) , ceramic alumina and other components. The ceramic alumina which contains the ceramic Titania is exposed to the exhaust cas in the exhaust manifold. In order to ensure the stable performance of the sensor, a heater is employed in the ceramic alumina.
